Ambassador Intelmann and international practitioners to speak at Symposium
Ambassador Tiina Intelmann, President of the Assembly of States Parties, will deliver a keynote speech at the Strengthening Gender Justice through International Prosecutions Symposium. On Thursday 6 September, Ambassador Intelmann will address the Symposium on the successes of the international justice mechanisms, progress for accountability for gender-based crimes and the significance of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a permanent actor for justice.
The President will also consider the important role of States Parties in providing support to the ICC, a theme which will be continued on the second day of the Symposium when Ambassador Intelmann will moderate a panel of Ambassadors who will be discussing the role of international courts and tribunals within the global system of security, justice and peace.
Along with Ambassador Tiina Intelmann, this panel will include ASP Vice-President Ambassador Markus Börlin of Switzerland, Ambassador Peter Goosen, of South Africa, Ambassador Christian Wenaweser, Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the United Nations (via video link) and Ambassador Håkan Emsgård of Sweden.
The Symposium provides a rare opportunity for practitioners within the tribunals and international courts to consider the challenges and opportunities at each stage of the justice chain and the importance of strengthening prosecutions for gender-based crimes. Panels will bring together some of the leading practitioners in this field including Gabrielle McIntyre, Petra Kneuer, Michelle Jarvis, Kristin Kalla, Maxine Marcus, Bob Reid, Xabier Agirre Aranburu, Erin Gallagher, Gloria Atiba-Davies and Paolina Massidda.
Other well known presenters include Justice Unity Dow, Botswana’s first female high court Judge; Justice Shireen Avis Fisher, President of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL); Justice Teresa Doherty, Trial Judge at the SCSL; and Anne Marie Goetz, Chief Advisor, Peace and Security at UN Women.
